Okay, okay we finally got the heater turned off over here. The past 4 days
we have had record high temps and well , I wasn't ready for it to say the
least. Good God, Here are the highs in the patch for the past 4 days, 86,
94,95, and 84. Its crazy. Last night a thunderstorm rolled through and
absolutly destroyed the cloches. I had a roof of plastic some 25 feet up in a
tree for crying out loud. I hunkered down the babies with wide 5 gallon
buckets with 50 pound cinder blocks on top, and let mother nature do her
thing. I awoke to skeletons for cloches, but as I took off the buckets I saw
happy warm babies smiling at me. I took note of the warm soil and superior
protection and have decided to make this night time covering a part of
everyday life until they outgrow the buckets. As it is the #469 Hester had to
be folded up a little to get in the bucket. The 1998 pumpkin video is doing
great with some excellent footage of the destroyed cloches.
Plant update,,,,,,,
Site #1 The 875 Lloyd. I have heard many tales now of this being a nightmare
to get a plant started from. The seeds are scarce, and don't germinate woth a
damn. Mine was slow out of the get go, but is comming on strong now that it
has a toehold in the soil. I rank it in 7th place currently.
Site #2 The #697 Ciliberto. I am having definate problems with this baby.
The first true leaf never came up, and it is just puttering with new leaves
trying to form. I have started a #615 Wilson to take its place if nothing
good happens in the next 5 days. I put this plant dead last.
Site #3 The #825 Shymansky. Still doing well, but not spectacular. There is
a huge difference between this, my 6th best seedling and the 7th best, but
none the less. It has a nice true leaf, but not as many immature leaves
visable.
Site #4 The #827 Holland. This plant has my eyes perking somewhat now. It
is in 3rd place, and going strong with the second most visable leaf sprouts.
It is showing much more vigor than last years #827.
Site #5 The #567.5 Mombert. This plant has recovered from the slug eating
now and is looking much better. I put this as my 5th best now.
Site #6 The #469 and #627.5 Hester. I am double xmas treeing this site. The
#627.5 is 5 days behind, and already is my 4th best plant, but gets dwarfed by
the #469, by far my best seedling with 2 true leaves open and expanding, 3
more beyond sprouts, and well, its kicking butt. I can't wait to see the
pumpkins.
Site #7 The #620 Stellpflug squash. This is my #2 plant so far and shows no
signs of letting up. It is in a rhubarb and other veggy area without the
special soil treatment, but is doing quite well. I had no cloche for this
little one, but it seems not to mind so much.
Well thats the rap in Oregon, Kirk Mombert is "on schedule" save for the same
thunderstorm that hit my place, I haven't heard how he made it through it.
Jack and Sherrie LaRue had a 50% germination failure, and are somewhat behind
where they wanted to be. (I'll believe it when I see it LOL!!!) Anyway, take
care and good luck
