Greetings All,
Its not pretty here, but the plants are slowly growing along. I have battled
the elements now for 3 weeks with not one day reaching 70 degrees, and now
with 22 days of at least a shower as far as rainfall goes. Further north in
the LaRue patch last night it actually froze, their plants are fine, but there
was ice on the outside of their cloches. Will a 50 pound pumpkin win the
Northwest championship this year? It may not take first, but it may not bring
down the average either.
Here is the lowdown on the plants that I have left:
Site one, #875 Lloyd... A real dog of a plant unfortuantely, it just is not
doing a thing. The #876.5 Lloyd I have double planted is 2 weeks behind and
nearly caught up.
Site #2 the #697 Ciliberto is actually doing okay now. It has come out of
its funk and is proceeding to grow at a slow but steady pace. Double planted
is a #615 Wilson that is growing very well under these cold conditions.
Site #3 the #825 Shymanski......Now sitting as my fourth best plant, it is
ready to be tipped over for the runner is sticking straight up about 2 feet.
Site #4 the #827 Holland.....although this baby lost a leaf and had its stem
split open, it still is doing well. It will be a few more days until it needs
to be tipped.
Site #5 the #567.5 Mombert..... Looking very good as my 3rd best plant. The
first really big elephant ear leaves have opened to over 18" across. Its got
some vigor, and I almost dare to hope.
Site #6 the #627.5 Hester.... my second best plant with a 2 1/2' runner
headed due north. Good leaves and decent color all things considered.
Doubleplanted, the #469 Hester, my best plant, Main runner 3' headed due
south. This plant looks to have some good squash genetics, dark green stem
with those white streaks in it. It looks meaty and strong.
Take Care, Brett The Pumpkinguru
