Hi Everyone!
I'm Colleen, and this is my first year growing giant pumpkins. I'm
really excited about it and am looking forward to this year's crop. I
live up in NH where my husband and I have a 55 acres horse farm. We've
got a large area specifically for our vegetable garden, which the
pumpkins will be part of. They have a spot that gets the sun all day
long (on top of a little hill) Anyways, here's a little history of
what I've done so far. Keep in mind I'm only a beginner! (It will be
interesting to see what kind of results I get.)
(By the way, do I need to worry about my chickens trying to get at the
pumpkins? Our chicks go outside in just a couple of weeks and if
the're able to fly over their fencing I'm sure they'll head straight
for our garden.)

04/??/98 My husband disced our garden area and picked rocks at
least 7 times. Our land has to have more rocks than anywhere. I
suspect part of it might have been a rock dump for the surrounding
fields way back in time. My husband also added about 400 lbs. of lime
to the garden area.
05/02/98 Planted 10 Atlantic Giant seeds directly into 2 1/4 inch
peet pots with Miracle grow potting soil.
05/11/98 Moved peet pots to bedroom which is the warmest room in
the house.
05/12/98 Added a little bit more potting soil to top of peet pots.
05/14/98 First germination spotted by my husband. (it took 12 days)
05/15/98 Moved peet pots back to the kitchen/dining room, where
they sit either on the kitchen counter or the dining room table.
05/16/98 Transplanted to 3 inch peet pots. Roots were started to
pop out of the smaller peets.
05/17/98 Gave one plant to next door neighbor. 9 peet pots left.
05/17/98 Planted all our other vegetables in our large garden.
Running out of room for the pumpkins.
05/18/98 8 plants are looking great. 1 seed hasn't germinated. I
remember it being a cracked seed.
05/19/98 That one seed is coming up. Dug down into the dirt a
little bit and saw some green. A few plants are starting to get their
third leaf now. Our garden dirt looks pretty sad and we are wondering
how are vegetables are going to do. If they do poorly, next year we'll
haul in tons of good top soil for the area.
05/20/98 -05/25/98 Acclimated the pumpkin plants to outdoors.
05/25/98 Planted three of my pumpkin plants. Removed a portion of
the peet pots before planting. Placed milk jug wind breakers around
them.
05/27/98 Planted two more of the pumpkin plants.
