Barb,
it sounds like a virus we used to get here in Va.
From the sound of it, it's Mosaic.
There's no cure for it though.
Are the leaves misshapen as well as blotchy?
It can be spread by aphids and by touching.
They say it can live in weeds and when the ahpids go from the weeds to your
plants, they infect them.
The best theing you can do is to put someting on the plants to kill the ahpids.
Perhaps spraying the weeds as well.
I have noticed that if I planted late in the season, say from July on I
would get this disease everytime.
But not if I planted in May.
I have no idea why.
One thing, try to avoid touching your plants that aren't infected.
That also means the tools you use.
I can't say for sure it's the same thing, but I believe Dan Gardner's page
had a picture of what it looks like.
You might want to have a look.
