Patti,
I plant those mammouth sunflowers from Burpee Seed Co. These babies get
big....I had them get 13' and a stalk the size of a tree. The actual
sunflower head is very large, these big heads will sometimes split the
stalk.
Anyways, don't stake them a 5".....stake them at 5'. Start tieing them as
they grow, maybe every 2'. Your stake should be about 10' in length. A
good piece of 3/4" conduit pipe works well. They are very strong stalk
plants and set a hell of a root anchor. I hope you planted them in full
sun....they love sun. The stalks will get thick as they grow
These plants love Miracle Grow and a good deep watering every other day.
Also watch for catapillars, they like those leaves, and so do deer.
Hope this helps.
