Polly,
Starting a weigh-off is really exciting stuff. I suggest you involve the
local Parks & Recreation Department as well as the Chamber of commerce to
help with sponsors and any other community groups willing to put in a few
hours of gratifying work. Brock and Pumkinguy have great suggestions
they really know pumpkins. Try talking to the Editor of the local paper
to advertise pumpkin seeds and make them available at the newspaper
office or local Parks & Rec. office. Bulk seed can be purchased from
Howard Dill at a reasonable cost and if you put out a plea for seeds on
the list I'm sure you could scare up enough seed to get you started. I
suggest that any seed reply be done on personal e-mail so the list
doesn't get bogged down with replies. I have been working on a weigh-off
for several years and can help with any questions you might have. It
would be a good idea to contact a scale company early to reserve a
platform scale and ask if they will be willing to donate it for the day.
Most Company's are willing to do this if you put up a sign saying who
donated it. Remember prize money is great but most people like to grow
for fun and a ribbon and plaque are a great keep sake. Most business
owners will donate in kind prize items and certificates. If all this
sounds like fun then you are well on your way towards becoming another
successful weigh-off for the growers in your area to meet and compete on
a warm October weekend!
