Having some "Field Of Dreams" or should I say "Field Of Pumpkins"!!! I am
getting this wild idea of (thinking about a startup Weigh off for Pumpkins!)
Is it very hard to do?? Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about
asking the local supermarket to be the town's sponsor (Dillions) we don't
have a Safeway... It would be small pumpkins compared to the big leagues.
But it would be GREAT FUN!! Any help would be Great!! Sure hope I get a
pumpkin this year or I will be quite embarrassed...

Polly,
Go for it. If you are in a hot climate area you might try watermellon and
pumpkins for the contest. I wouldn't worry about the size of the entries. We
were all beginners at one time. My first specimen was 73 pounds back in 1983.
Get local business involved, garden centers, 4-H. Tie the contest in with a
fall festival in town that may already be in place. Ray waterman can fix you
up with some watermellon and pumpkin seeds. Howard Dills seeds are good too,
but mail from Nova Scotia is slow and you are running out of time. Get a
little prize money, get some seeds in the hands of 20 people that will give
it a serious try. Start them in the next 2 or 3 weeks. You are warmer down
there and they will come along quicker.
