I burry most of my vines, and have allways seen more rooting on the burried
than the not burried. I haven't tried or observed any plants growing on 8"
of compost so this may help, but I find it hard to beleive that the root
would develope from the top without being covered. I have also had an
increase in rooting by using a seed treatment calle Stimulate, which is sold
for soybeans. I think that it contains some mixture of auxins. My personal
opinion is that for more roots it is best to burry all vines. I haven't
experienced any rotting problems that were caused by burrying. Usually
rotting occurs because of another factor.
