Re: roots coming out peat pot

Now that I've tried 10" peat pots, I can't see why anyone would ever use
a 4"--it just doesn't make sense to transplant sprouted seeds from
ziplock bags into 4" pots and then, a couple of days later, put them in
larger pots, and then again transplant outside. Roots don't like to be
disturbed. The last two years when I have started seeds in the 4" pots,
about half of the time I notice a nice root popping out the bottom of the
pot EVEN BEFORE the seedling breaks the surface. BAD NEWS, I'd say. It
seems that most methods of starting are not limited by size of the pot.
My 10" pot fits inside my Coleman cooler, as does the 1 gallon milk jug
with top cut off (what I use when I'm out of big peat pots). Why do most
books and other sources say to use 4" peat pots? I see no advantage and
serious disadvantages.

I guess if I feel so strongly about keeping roots in tact, I should try
the direct start method. I've always been worried that I'd lose my
precious seeds, though. What's the success rate with direct start?
