Dan,
Since this is my first year growing
AG's, I was deferring to Langevin's book on using 4" peat pots. I was
under the impression that you could get true leaf formation prior to
transplanting in these pots (p. 61 first book). I guess I thought AG's
were slow growers after the break the surface, until they are
transplanted. Next year I am going to plant into 1 gallon nursery
pots. The 4" pots I used were a waste of time.
If I germinated them, and then
placed them peat pot and all in a 1 gallon container, it might be worth starting
with the 4" pots. I guess you live and learn. When in doubt,
let commonsense dictate. I did not carefully consider my actions before
planting. It won't happen again this year.

Subject: Re: Roots coming out of peat potsJohn,After reading your e-mail tonight, I decided to check to see if I hadroots coming out of my peat pots. I did. I started my seeds lastSaturday morning, planning to give them a week in the peat potsbefore putting them into my cold frames. Well, now I havetransplanted my biggest one (One Ton Cross....1061X1006) intoa cut off gallon milk jug and prepped my patch to plant this onetomorrow night when I get home from work.I probably should have left it in the peat pot and not transfered it tothe milk jug, but I just couldn't stand seeing that little (I mean vigorous)root growing into nothing.Next year I am going to germinate my seed as I did this year (damppaper towel method), but then I am going to put them directly intoheated cold frames in the patch. No more peat pots... too stressful.PS. I don't agree with the Remington method of keeping away pests....I would use a WIINCHESTER!Dan in Vermont
