ICH! INFESTED! HELP!

This isnt a pumpkin question, but I don't know of any better group to ask about pests in the yard/garden. I've been finding nests of worms on my trees and bushes. They start with a small cocoon in the crook of some branches, and build on it until its huge and kills off the leaves on the branches above the cocoon. The first nest I found had worms about 1/2" long. The nest I found today was loaded with 1" worms just packed in the layers of the nest. I soaked it with bug killer, peeled off the nest with a stick, and then soaked it all again.

What are they, and what specific things should I be using to stop them? THEY ARE GROSS! I have shivers just from thinking about peeling off those nests!

HELP!

Thanks!
