Well if you all were wondering, here it is,
Tempuratures are killing us here in the Pacific Northwest. Over the past
week, the recording station nearest to my patch had 5 all time record low
high temps. On Friday we only managed 53 degrees. We have had measurable
rainfall nearly every day this month and the plants are now a full 2 weeks
behind their progress last year.
Nuts and Syrup Challenge may already be won, for reports are trickling in and
the PNWGPG is hurting, largely.
Site Sub Zero, Last year this site held all the sweet corn I could eat, and
before that it was turf. This year it has a #560 LaRue, doing well, but not
in my top five. It is sitting on its 4th true leaf.
Site Zero, Last year this site held the #620 Stellpflug squash. That plant
had no love and only managed a #183 squash. This year it has the #990 Bax.
The bad news is this plant has been quarnteened due to a possible WMV2
infection. It does have 4 true leaves as well.
Site #1, A second year site as well. Last year held the #875 Lloyd which
turned out to be a sterile plant. This year has the former world record
squash, #900.5 Lyons, and the #738 Stellpflug, both of which are attempting
to squash out this year and break the PNWGPG record squash. Currently, the
#738 is doing very well and sits in the number 5 position.
Site #2, A second year site as well too. Last year had the #615 Wilson which
was removed for more room for the #697 Ciliberto and due to the fact it was
sterile as well. The #697 however produced the #720 Hester that went 95
pounds over chart without a main root stump. This year it has the #469
Hester and the #825 Shymanski with the #825 sittimg in the #3 position in
terms of size.
Site #3, This site has produced the #299.5 and #288 back in 1995, In 1996 the
#345, #311, #310, #307, #300, #288, #281, #280, #276 all of of the #910
Nelson I had there as a pollinator. In 1997 it hald a #627.5 Hester and
produced the #598, #451, #408, and the #345. Last year it raised the #825
Shymanski which got a stump problem and didn't do so well. This year my
apprentice is raising a #737 Stellpflug, a #469 Hester, and the #801.5
Stelts. All plants are overfertilized, but pliugging along.
Site #4, This site Produced my largest pumpkin my first and second year
raising pumpkins, 13.5 pounds in 1993, 135 pounds in 1994, then in 95 I
discovered Atlantic giants, rasised the #923 Brown seed and produced a
splitter of a plant and managed a #279. In 96 it raised the #804 Zehr which
produced the #676 (OUW). In 1997 it raised the #827 Holland and pumped out
the #378, and the #312. Last year it held another #827 Holland and produced
the #662, #557, and the #335.
Site #5, This is my best site. 1994 its first year pumped out the #133.5,
1995 it produced the #627.5, #558, #510, #476, #475 off of the #910 Nelson I
had there. In 1996 it had a sterile #833.5 Mombert. 1997 grew the #850.5
LaRue plant and pumped out the famous #469 (33.1% over chart), #347, #302.
In 1998 the #567.5 Mombert was here and produced the #789, 528, and the #513.
This year it has my 4th best plant at this time, the #946.5 Geerts.
Site #6, A new site this year, former home to "The Stump" of an old growth
Douglas Fir over 10 feet through. Now the #1010 Mackenzie grows there along
with the #697 Ciliberto.
Site #7, Last year it was new and grew the #627.5 Hester and the #469 Hester.
From this site last year came the #615, #608 (Scar), and the #475 plus a
herd of 250 plus pounders. This year it has the #935 Lloyd and is my second
best plant.
Site P-1, new in 99, It has the #449 Marcellus, and is nice.
Site P-2, new in 99, It is home to my #720 from last year and is my best
plant. The main runner is forming up and it has 7 plus true leaves.
Well there is where I am standing as of yesterday. Take Care,
Brett The Pumpkinguru Hester
