flat vines

Pumpkineers,
I have run into early trouble, and am having a flat vine develope on
my Mombert 866 plant. What I am looking for is your expert opinions to
those whom have had this problem before, and what to do about it?
1. Can a flat vine plant grow fruit, and
2. If I have to cut of the vine and try to get a new main to grow, do I
cut it off at the spot of the beginningof the vine, or canI cut it off
where the vine is at now?

My flat vine started early, and Is only like 6 inches out on the
main, and I have about 12inches of flat vine so far. Do I cut about 2
inches off and bury it, or do I have to hack it off at the spot of the
beginning of the flat vine(6 inches from the base of the plant)?

While the Mombert plant isnt doing that well due to the flat vine,
the Ciliberto 697 doesn't seem to be doing that bad. Each plant is
identical in size, but I am having the "excited" vine syndrome. my vine
wants to grow straight up in the air instead of growing along the
ground. Still too early to tell, but it looks okay..

Would you start a new plant for a backup now or is too late for
starting a new plant? I probably wouldnt set fruit on it till the
beginning of August, but it would be better than not having anything in
the Mombert spot , just in case this flat vine isnt cureable..
