Re: Misters: Karen and Robert Troy

Shade Cloth is a little better if you have fungus or Mildew problems. You don't
have to keep the plants so wet all the time. I know many growers who use Shade
Cloth that blocks up to 50% sun but it would really depend on how hot your area
gets. I don't think I would block that much light if I didn't have to.

If your misters on on individual risers, I would lower them a bit, maybe to
about Three or Four feet above the ground. If they are on one continuous line
overhead, just make sure they are pointed down. I only use them when it gets
real hot, say 85 and above. Turn them on at about 11 AM and off by 3 or 4 PM.
You have to experiment to see what's best and continually adjust according to
weather. Most growers that I know have them come on for a few minutes at a time
and then off for 10 or 15 minutes then back on again. You will almost always
loose some mist to the air.

In order to have misters come on and off that often in one day, you have to buy
a pretty expensive timer. You can build one a lot cheaper using and indoor light
timer ( the kind with multiple pins to vary the time ) and a 24 volt step down
transformer to operate the valves. Just make sure it's out of the weather.
