HI TO ALL LIST MEMBERS
It is with great sadness that I have to report that I will no longer be able
to grow Giant Pumpkins, Squash or Marrows in what was my Pumpkin Patch. On
May 26 1999 I was informed that the landlord, to whom we pay rent to for our
house, will be moving in to the hose next door and taking over the land that
was once my Pumpkin Patch.
Of all things, he intends to grass down the area and his decision is final
and no negotiations about his decision can be made. We have not paid rent for
the area that was my Pumpkin Patch but had an agreement that we looked after
the ground and maintained it. As a result of being too busy to grow Giant
Pumpkins in 1997/8 The Pumpkin Patch was not maintained and admittedly got a
little out of hand.
I made the decision in January to get the Patch in shape ready for the 2000
Growing Season and spend time on it when weather permitted. It has only been
over the past 4 weeks that the Patch had dried out enough and I had sprayed
all weeds off ready for working over and I had booked a rotavator to till the
Patch this coming weekend.
I am devastated by our landlords decision but I guess that it is my own fault
for not maintaining the Patch in recent years and had allowed the Patch to
become untidy and unmanaged and out of production. I have no alternative but
to come to the conclusion that I will have to give up any ideas of Growing
any Pumpkins etc in the future and have decided to give away or sell some of
the equipment that I have acquired for Growing them.
I also have a very large collection of Giant Pumpkin Seeds that I will no
longer have a need for and may make them available to List Members sometime
in the near future. I am not exactly sure of the exact quantity of Seeds I
have in my collection but I do know that there are some Seeds that have been
mentioned on the Pumpkin List and are regarded as high value Seeds.
I think that I will have to do an audit on my Seed Collection and make a list
of all the Seeds I have in my collection and then decide how to make them
available to List Members or non List Members. I remember seeing the Seed
Auctions on the list a Month or so ago but I understand that it may not be
legal to accept payments for Auctioned Seeds etc and I do not want to get
tied up with legalities etc.
Although I have had to retire from Growing Giant Pumpkins in the foreseeable
future I will continue to stay contact with everyone that I am in touch with
and continue to support the Sport/Hobby of Growing the Giants.
I do hope that you are all successful with YOUR own Pumpkins in 1999 and I
look forward to reading the many interesting e mails posted on the List.
HAVE A GREAT SEASON
BEST WISHES
