Hello from Iowa,
Busy, busy, busy, again this weekend. Gutted my brothers kitchen and rebuilt a new wall sat. and sun. Lot's of work left to do. lots of holiday things going on monday but plants are some of my best ever to date.
Friday we put up smaller temperary windbreaks around all 5 hills in patch 2 and
3. We also roto tilled both patches completly for the first time this year. Patch 3 has come up with an unforeseen problem. I don't think we will have access to a water source. This kinda bites!!! Not much we can do about it. Here are the updates. I will only list the plants that I figure I'm going to go with. All hills have a minimum of at least 1 back up plant.
Patch #1 My back yard 2 Hills here and still have about 70% of the patch covered with my winter rye. I've cut it 3 times and it does help choke out all weeds!! A spiecial thanks To Mr. Handy. I plan to till it under as the plant continues out over the garden. It really tills under nicely!!
Hill #1 431 Carlson. By far the biggest plants I currently have. Starting to vine maybe 8"to12". Both are very stout and are now vining the right direction.
Hill #2 The 791 Glasier was put in late. He was lagging quite a bit earlier but seems to be getting his growing shoes on!!! Looks like he could begin vining in about 5 days. 5 leaves now!!
Patch 2 2 hills
Hill #1 The stumpless wonder looks like the one we will go with here. The 582 was originally a back up for the castellucci which died do to our only human error to date. ( Trust me, there will be more human errors!!!!) The plants looks good and it just starting to vine.
Hill #2 The soon to be infamous 879 Rockwell looks to be the plant of choice here. ROCKY were pulling for some big GREEN fruit here!!! Fire up ROCK the pressure is on. Atleast this patch has water access!!! The plant is about 2 to 3 days from vining. Looks good. Soil here ain't the best.
Patch #3 3 hills here. we might dub this "THE DESERT"
Oh this hurts to tell
Hill #1 the 935 Lloyd. Starting to vine but currently the wrong direction. To stout and thick to train yet but we will get him to turn around. Nice looking plant
Hill #2 The 634 Andersen Looks good but might be a flat vine candidate. starting to lay down and vine is noticably flat about 3 to 4 inches from the base. It is a wait and see situation for now!!
Hill #3 the 815 Andersen looks good and is ready to start vining. Not a large stout vine like some others but healthy. Looking for maybe a green one here also. It would be nice!!!
Anyone growing the Andersen 634 Now or before. Ever notice the flat vine before or am I just LUCKY!!!!
The Carlsons Dan and Beth
