RE: Elephants
Beth,
This was my first year doing it - I wanted to do it last year but mine went
down in late September - It was a great day at the zoo - I had my pumpkin on
display for a few weeks - the newspapers and radio were all drumming it up
before hand - we cut the pumpkin open, removed the seeds, threw in some
apples, carrots, and yams, and then sealed the plug with peanut butter. The
elephants cautiously approached the pumpkin and then began to move it with
their trunks like it weighed nothing - they are incredible animals - then
slowly over 30 minutes or so they would snap off pieces with their trunks by
holding the pumpkin down with their feet and eat - I left after half an hour
and by that time they had eaten at least 75% of it - the zoo staff was
thrilled to do it - it seemed like a good thing to do rather than just
wasting it - (I had a radio station offer me $500 to drop it from a tower -
but you baby these things for 6 months and that is the last thing I wanted
to do) If you ever have a chance to donate it to the zoo - do it - it is an
incredible experience...
Kevin
PS - as an added benefit they've offered me all the elephant poop that I can
take. How's that for re-cycling?

Kevin,
Those elephant pics are too cool! I love it. Do they eat the pumpkins?
Have you done this before? That's so awesome, we should see about doing
something like that at our zoo. Thanks for posting the pictures.
Beth
