Gary,
This year I used a cheap, clear paint drop cloth
for my cold frames. One was 12' x 4' (I only let the main vine
grow on the plant in this one) and the other was 8' x 8'. I planted
the one in the 8 x 8 two weeks before the one in the 12 x 4, so the plant
was sprawling everywhere out side of the cold frame way before the one in
the 12 x 4 was even close to out growing the cold frame.
No burning occurred for awhile until early
summer and when it started to occur it was on the tips that were light
green that out grown the 8 x 8 greenhouse. The one in
the 12 x 4 greenhouse hadn't out grown its greenhouse yet and didn't
show any burning. In early July the day came when the
tip protruded out of the greenhouse and two days later the tip
had gotten so burned that it looked like someone had taken a lighter to
it.
My theory is that the cheap drop cloth
somehow protected the leaves from burning. I also noticed that more
burning occurred when the UV factor was higher. Could it be that
because the drop cloth was not UV stablized that it absorbed UV rays
and didn't allow any UV rays to burn the leave? I'm not sure
but I know I will use cheap, clear drop cloths next instead of
expensive shade cloths.
I live in Ohio so I don't have to normally worry
about extreme temperatures (+95 degrees) so I'm not sure if temperatures
above 95 would cause burning. Please correct me if you see anything
that
isn't right.

I am in the process of developing a new shading and misting system for next year and I need to know what causes pumpkin leaves to burn. Is it air temperature? Or sun rays? Or both? I also have noticed that pumpkin leaves that are shaded a little grow much bigger. Why do you think this is so? Has any one else noticed this?
