Child of the Pumpkin Gods

Rumors of winter abound, but no aspect of each perfect day here serves to support that wild theory.  A splatter of rain and the fiery color in the tree outside suggest that winter perhaps should arrive soon, but I think the old popsicle forgot to wind the clock and still lays sleeping, with wet dreams of fun with mother spring splashing in his head.

My 789 Zunino plant is still growing - obviously hasn't heard the rumor of winter or doesn't care.  Since I stopped pruning and watering her around weigh off time, she's taken the opportunity to set at least 12 more pumpkins.  The biggest three are now over a hundred pounds.

I harvested number 12, a heavily ribbed, very orange 150 pounder, about a week ago.  This brings the total poundage for the plant to 3,200 pounds.  She's going for a record of 5,000 pounds and doesn't care how many pumpkins she has to grow to get there.

four young pumpkins peek from the foliage of Athena's child

A child of the pumpkin gods Athena (789 Zunino) and Aphrodite (567 Zunino), she thinks herself immortal.  By thanksgiving, I have to let her know that pumpkin plants live forever only in the minds and green houses of mad scientist growers in obscure (and perhaps illegal) experiments.

I hope she does take it too hard when she learn of her mortality.  The unbelievable total poundage of her spawn  and their beauty should be of some comfort. Her fertility will outpace her mortality as the beauty of her offspring has outshone their sheer size.   I will let you know, hopefully before Christmas, where this all ends.....
