re: Selfing- linkage & crossover

Casey-
your not nuts.
most of us have forgotten any genetics that we
learned, execpt for the basics, - that is
assuming we learned any at all.
you make some great points.
I think there is a greater diversity in seeds
from any given pumpkin than we think.
might this lead us back to the "sliver bullet seed"
thoery. that from one desireable cross pumpkin, a
certain amount of seeds, say 20%, get the desireable
traits or best genetics of the cross... 60% get
average genetics of the cross and 20% get poorer
traits ?
wouldn't this explain why "top" seeds sometimes don't
preform even for experienced heavy hitters?
the other line of thought, which has been
expressed several times by others, is that
basically all the seeds out there have "good
enough" genetics to grow a record. that the
real difference the enviroment- the soil,
fert, pruning, watering, etc. and the weather.
- ie the grower and the weather.
so which way does linkage and crossover
take us - silver bullet or environment ?
both ? or somewhere else completely ?
just one more thing... could you explain
linage to us ?
sorry couldn't resist - LOL !
gordon
PS- get well BARB!
