I used to have gophers all the time. I found they don't like blood meal,
hoof & horn meal or moist soil. Maybe the fish emulsion and liquid seaweed
helps also. Just to be sure, I first dig a hole about 3'x3' where I'm going
to plant my seed and double line it with chicken wire and bring it up above
soil level about two or three inches. Then when the vine grows, I use strips
of chicken wire folded over about 6 or 7" wide under the main vine only. I
figure I can afford to loose a side vine here and there and using wire under
the main vines keep me plenty busy. I had a gopher eat a tap root but was
stopped at the chicken wire.
Under the pumpkin, I use heavy fiberglass belt material from the paper mills
complements of Shellie Cramer. If I didn't have the belt material, I would
use plywood with sand on it. The sand helps the pumpkin slide a bit as it
grows. Just make sure you keep the pumpkin sheltered so the wood and sand
stay dry.
I haven't had gophers for two years now.
