seeds and soil temp

Hello list.

I am writing on behalf of my step-dad. He has been growing AG's for 4 years
now. Success thus far has been limited( 492 lbs from a seed sent to us by
Bill Vandersteen in 2002) ( Bill, if you read this, fyi, it was from 695.8 Van
00 & 945 Van 01) but we have found many growers extremely helpful. Each year
we try to position ourselves so that we can return the favor with the members
of the list but so far we are still waiting for the "big one". To that end
..., we are looking for some seeds. Could anyone who has some to share please
contact me?

Also, it is easy to understate the dedication my step-dad has put into his
patch. Wind barriers, soil testing, manure, sulpher, straw, a sistern and
pump for rainwater,,, and the list goes on. My question to the list is how
important is soil temp.? We live just outside of Winnipeg Manitoba (50 degrees
North). We build a hot house for the plants to get started in each spring but
we often have night temps. between 0 - 10 degrees Celcius / 32 - 45 F in May
and June. Do you think that some sort of heat tape would be helpful? If so
in what diameter around the main root?

Thanks

D, Marshall
