The Butterball shape
VINCE WROTE: Hi Chad,
Yup, some of them where grown on their bottoms. However, the
pumpkins came out a nicer rounder shape when grown on their
sides.
I met a young grower (Future Farmer category) at Elk Grove with a lovely
wheel-shaped pumpkin in competition. I asked if he had grown it on its
blossom end, and he said that the pumpkin had shoved its top part into
the soil so that he never saw the STEM at all while it was growing. I
don't recommend encouraging your pumpkin to grow like this, but it sure
made for a pretty fruit at contest.
