   You are right about CO2. I used it back about 10 years ago. I,m not sure 
if CO2 in the soil would be good or not.In a heavily fortified organic, 
composty soil that is breaking down there is probably  more than enough CO2 ...maybe 
too much. Which brings about an interesting question ,What is the ideal soil 
gas mix. Roots do need oxygen, do they need CO2 or can excess CO2 levels in the 
soil hurt the roots.  Definitely oxygen in the soil. Co2 is taken in mainly 
by the stomata on the underside of the leaves.
