RE: Champions Of Orange from a first time SOuth African grower.

Alan: you need to support the stem so it doesn't come crashing down to the ground or get snapped off by the wind, when i have a plant that tends to grow upwards i usually put a support under it like a springing willow stick and also cross two sticks above it in an "X" shape to keep the wind from snapping it, when the vine gets long and heavy enough just remove the springing stick from underneath and lower the vine to the ground.

good luck

From a first time South African grower:

I just planted my first pumpkin which I believe is an Atlantic giant. I
planted it indoors, it took about 2 weeks to germinate and was then planted
when it had 3 strong leaves. The main stem grew straight, then curved
upward, now keeps on curving and has done about a 90 degree bend, with only
about 5 leaves on it (oh, it's summer here in the the Southern Hemisphere
whilst you guys freeze your butts off).
My concern is that the stem will break off. Is it normal to curve around
like this whilst growing?

Alan

Martin: while i do prefer my pumpkins to, well look like pumpkins, i am growing them for the weight factor, if i had chose to grow for looks alone then I'd chose a variety known for color and shape like a Burpee Prize-winner or Big-Max or Big-Moon varieties, but to grow a true competition biggie, then it has to be an Atlantic Giant, but if it comes out to be a nice shape and of orange color then that's a bonus! my 1011.4 lber was a nice orange color and kin of long and not blobish but had it been a yellow or cream colored blob I'd have liked it just as much! and of course I'm growing them for fun, i mean is there another reason? can people actually prosper from growing AG's?
