RE: Champions Of Orange from a first time SOuth African grower.

Thanks for the advice. The winner in my area last year had a whopping 45 kg
pumpkin (99 lbs). From what I hear from the big guys, that should be easy to
beat? We'll see. Anyway, the winner told me his pumpkin suddenly turned
orange and started to ripen too early, with no more growing for over 4
weeks. I read somewhere what causes a pumpkin to stop growing but cannot
find it again. Any clue as to why this happens?

Alan

Alan: you need to support the stem so it doesn't come crashing down to the
ground or get snapped off by the wind, when i have a plant that tends to
grow upwards i usually put a support under it like a springing willow stick
and also cross two sticks above it in an "X" shape to keep the wind from
snapping it, when the vine gets long and heavy enough just remove the
springing stick from underneath and lower the vine to the ground.

good luck

Glenn
