Pumpkin Roots

Something I don't understand is why do you have to prepare a 30 foot
diameter pumpkin patch if the pumpkin roots only use about a 5 foot
diameter space for its roots? Why can't I just dig a big hole(4x4feet) and
fill it with come compost and organic soil?
