The main roots off the trunk of the plant will travel out 20 to 30 ft. or
more. You can encourage rooting at the leaf axle by burying the vine. The
leaf axle is the intersection at which point the leaf stem joins the vine.
You will notice a little nodule or bump at this intersection. This will
develop into a new root

If you prune tendrils or tertiary vines and intend to bury your primary and
secondary vines, to help avoid disease wait a couple of days to let the
wound heal then bury the vine. The roots off the leaf axle may go down 6 to
8 inches depending on your soil. The majority of these roots on my 977 went
down about 6 inches. Not very deep.
