Re: Weird Mix

Rick,

Very well said. We have a lot of mix out there. Lets get down to growing.
Years ago in college (genetics and other classes) I learned that a greater
portion of the end result was due to environment, feeding, care, etc. than
was from genetic background. In dairy cows the standard percentages 20%
genotypic and 75% phynotypic (not sure on these spellings - been a long
time!) were often stated. I believe the genetics to be present in the seeds
of today - November 24, 1997; and I really feel they are there for a 1 ton
pumpkin. What we have to do is overcome the variables of nature, and provide
an ideal growing environment, considering all aspects of the plant and
specimens needs. This is the future of the one ton monster! Its easy to
expect someone, out there to come up with a miracle seed; but getting down
and getting dirty is where we need to focus. Its been 11 years since I first
talked about the 1,000 lber. It took us 10 years to grow it. I think we can
hit 1,500 lbs by 2000! And 2,000 lbs in 10 years!

I've not seen any comment on a new squash record set November 4th @ 962 lbs
 - believe me the genetics are out there. Lets focus on the other issue of
growing and environment.
