Soil Test

G'day all,
I am attempting to test the soil by first mixing some water to see the levels. My instructions say that the soil should settle in an hour or so but if it is clay it may take 24 hours. I found that after 48 hours it is still muddy. I assume that the clays are very fine and stay in suspension a long time.
Does anyone know by say adding gypsum to the soil will cause the clay to precipitate faster or am I just stuck with this?
