Stewart:
Gypsum is only effective if the clay is almost pulverized, first & the
gypsum is thoroughly mixed in. Done this way, it will keep the soil much
more soft & friable & it will drain much better. If you add it to the
soil without preparing it as above, it will harden it almost to asphalt,
depending upon how much gypsum you add.
