Pumpkin Regatta

Hello,
I'm back, after a long computer crash. The pumpkin regatta ended up in
Candlewood Lake in Connecticut....returned to the site of pumpkin boatings
birth. The original plan was to go off at Central Park in New York City with an
open competition and prize money for the winner. Stew Leonards had trouble
with the NYC parks commish and the deal ending up falling through. Stew
purchased 5,000 dollars worth of big pumpkins ( 4 of them) to use for boats.
When the NYC deal fell through, Stew was not interested in moving the Regatta
to a more rural site....his main interest was the national media attention
that a NYC race could bring. He ended up carving one in Times Square and
putting the other three on display in his stores. On Halloween day, Stew
called me up and asked me if I wanted the three 800 pounders to use as I saw
fit.......I said sure!!!!!! The Regatta was reborn on Lake Candlewood last
Sunday. Some new World records were set. I sailed, Brian Kitney of Stratford,
Ct., and my cousin Carmen Miller of Hampton Beach, N.H.. Carmen, known as " C.
Z". Miller was the worlds first women to pilot a pumpkin boat and the first
grandmother to sail. At the end of the race, we put Stevie Miller ( 6 years
old) in one of the boats for a quick spin, so he became the youngest pumpkin
pilot. We took off from the New Fairfield town park on the west side of the
lake and cruised 2 miles to the Brookfield town park on the east side of the
lake. This was the same course that The Mighty Mabel took 2 years ago. We used
electric trolling motors and the trip took 2 hours so no new speed records
were set. A reporter from the Boston Herald came down and covered the story.
Next year.......who knows......A land speed record at the Bonneville Salt
flats, flying pumpkins, time will tell. We had a great time. Pumpkin season is
just about over know. I am starting to recover from our 3,000 visitors for
Halloween.
