Let me reinforce what you've said:
This is exactly true! When I first started reading this list
back in early 1998 this year, what I (erroneously) picked up on was
that good seed costs a lot of money... at the time, some auctions
were going on, with a single seed hitting $50 or more.
I certainly didn't want to enter the hobby spending $50 on
one seed, only to have some ground hog eat the sprout, so
I wound up buying store-bought commercial seed, of unknown
heritage and had very dissaspointing results. At the time,
I never *thought* to seek seed from the list, much less FREE
seed. I never knew it was possible because most of that offering
seems to go on just after seed harvest; in the Spring everyone's
focused on planting what they've already got, and it just never came up
on the list at that time.
Now a year into this, I realize that those $50+ ones were very, very
special-case, highly desirable seeds. Like you've said, there's
PLENTY of REALLY good (equally good) seed available for *free* through the
wonderful generousity of people on this list; after all, what would
you do with 1,000 seeds besides share them? I've now
gotten some truly wonderful seed from list members, complete
with amazing 6-generation family trees, photos of the actual parent
pumpkin (or squash as the color may be!) up on the Web and all, and
I'm sure I'll have a great growing season next year!
