RE: caffeine / coffee

Speaking of coffee as a stimulant for pumpkin vines...I always add my
coffee grounds to the compost bin. High in potassium. Seems to be
incorporated in the compost rather well.

I have found that some of you would like to post a reply note from the
archives. In my review, I found one browser is able to do the task
with
little work.

If you would like to reply to a post via the archives, I strongly
recommend
you use Netscape. Here is the process.

You need to be subscribed to the mailing list and only that email
address
will work in this process. If you sign on with more than one email
address,
then this process will work. I have three addresses.

In your Netscape mail program, turn off you html mail replies.

Go to the archive pages http://www.mallorn.com/lists/pumpkins

Select a month and a message.
On each page you will see this type of heading.

*	To: <pumpkins@mallorn.com>
*	Subject: spelling bee
*	From: "person" person@ person.com
*	Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1998 23:18:17 -0500
*	Content-Type: multipart/alternative;boundary="---
*	Reply-To: pumpkins@mallorn.com
*	Sender: owner-pumpkins@mallorn.com

- -With your mouse, select or double click on pumpkins@mallorn.com
- -Now you should see a new email message window appear.
- -On this new window, will be a sortment of buttons on the top and the
one
which we are interested in is the QUOTE button.
- -Press the QUOTE button.
- -What should of happen is all the data from that home page would of
been
copied onto the new email message window.
- -Now look for the subject and CUT/COPY and paste it into the subject
line
area on your email message window.
- -Take you mouse and place it in front of the subject heading and
type RE:
- -Why? Because you are replying to the message.
- -GO to the body of the email message and remove anything you do not
want to
send with your reply.
- -Now type your response to the message and hit send.

That is it!

IE is not user friendly enough to use this process. There is a way, but
it
is to time consuming to use.

From: Bob Marcellus <marcellus@cybertap.com>
Subject: RE: plant stimulants and 734 report from Spencerville.

OK Team
I confess I used a plant steroid this year. (but Source is Confidential
till next fall). This stuff I used to folair feed and found that one
should
not apply before fruit is set. I blame the steroid on producing mutant
pumpkins on two of my plants. Had seeds growing on the outside of the
pumpkin off the side of the pistil (flower). A separate appendage about
the
one eight the diameter of the female part sticking(15mm long 5mm
diameter)
out at 90 degrees to the pistil half way up, with roughly 6 seeds
growing
from the end (seeds approximately 5mm long) forming their own little
flower. This occurred on the first pumpkin on two of my plants. First
one
out quit at soccer ball size - turned white. The one on second plant
grew
to 150 lbs. then split. I had pollinated my 734 on this plant by this
time,
but wasn't paying any attention to it since my Greer 1006 was growing so

much. Actually cut 8-10 feet off the 734 plant to allow the 1006 plant
more
room in early August. The 734 had the largest diameter pistil I've seen.
I
think it was larger in diameter than the pumpkin. Another mutant I said
to
myself at the time. I normally cut the pistil off with a knife flush
with
the pumpkin but for this one since I didn't give it much hope I snapped
it
off with my thumbnail which produced a rough and wavy surface. At 734
#'s
the blossom end was 200-300mm (10-12 inches) in diameter. and the waves
were 80mm (3") deep. Upon dissection found that the thinnest section of
hard skin was only 5mm thick (1/4 inch) so probably would not have made
it
to 1000 #'s. But it did make a great boat.
The 734 plant was not pruned, not buried, ignored, cut back very early,
had
small leaves, only got 20-20-20 foliar once or twice, got the steroid
twice
early and then again about twice after it was 400-500#. Grew on a patch
7ydsx7yds 440 sq feet.(41 sq. m). Only other thing I did was gave it
along
with all plants 5 hand fulls of 10-10-10 solid fertilizer in the 2m dia
circle that I started it in, and a bit more as I tilled the circle
bigger.
Also didn't till in the fall (had no time) till McIntyre brought his
machine over about 1 week before planting . (Thanks again Paul) I did
till
in some leaves then that I had in bags over the winter though at that
time.
Paul also gave me 5 plants as I had trouble germinating mine. The only
thing that grew for me was the Greer. (Thanks again Paul).

Any insight here? 200- 734 Seeds donated to the OSLGA for their seed
distribution plan which they distribute with their membership.1998 Seeds

from Sproule, Greer, Ray, Gibson, McIntyre, Baird, Rose, Lanerman,

got my Greer 1006.

Alfalfa provides a type of plant growth hormone to when mixed into the
soil.
Not sure how long it takes to release this so the plants can use it.

Anyone ever heard of using fresh ground coffee..........had a dang good

mention this as a growth stimulant ...plus coffee grinds are high

I have heard of the coffee theory as well, haven't tried it though. It
stimulates a plants metabolic rate much like a humans, tough to control
however and may cause premature maturing of the fruit. It might be fun
to
throw on a pound or two just for onryness.

Ed and Robert are also holds three Guinness World Records for pumpkins
and squash....671 & 816 lbs (pumpkins) and 595 squash back in the late
80s. The grew 800 lbs this year but it took a squat just as they
arrived at the weigh-in site...so they never entered. Had numerous 700
lbers and a bunch of 600 & 500 lber this year.
