Re: Gold Rush Pumpkins

Barbi & group,
The Gold Rush variety has the largest stem I have seen on a field
pumpkin. They average 35 pounds in my commercial fields but had one go 103
pounds. The stems on a gold rush makes a howden look like a little toothpick.
Tom Fox was developed by Tom Fox in New Hampshire....an acquaintance of mine.
Tom fox is a mid sized pumpkin with a large stem for its size. 75% of my
fields are planted with these. Gold Rush seeds go for 50 or 60 dollars a
pound, compared to the run of the mill 12 dollar field pumpkin seeds. It pays
to spend the extra money and get some good seeds. As far as rotting, they
should be sprayed. If they were picked very late in the season, they may have
broken down due to chilling injury.
