Welcome Andrea in NZ
Hi Andrea
Where abouts in NZ are you? I am here in South Taranaki home
of NZ's biggest ever pumpkin.
We would be very keen to support you through the season.
Give me a call and I will be happy to put you on our mailing list of
registered growers.
Together we will beat the Aussies!!!!
My seedlings are still in pots but are likely to go out
tonight. I am away at a conference for four days and they hay have outgrown
the pots by the time I get back.
Be careful if your compost heap is too fresh. If it is all
rotted then that should be fine - but be cautious, the root systems need a
lot of room.
Have a 'Parky' day

Hi,
I am new to this mailing list, and I am growing my
first pumpkins
ever...
Just today, the first green leaves have come up out
of the soil (in
pots)...
My question is, where to plant the transplant the
seedlings to ...Could
I plant them directly into an old compost heap? -
containing a lot of
old lawn clippings etc. I am growing them for a
Giant Pumpking contest.
Thanks

Hi everyone. An update on my pumpkins. I
retrieved seeds from my 405
and got 500 good seeds. There also had to be about
100 seeds that were
germinated. I would love to give these away. If
anyone is interested in
them email me privately. I think they have a good
potential. My plant was
very resistent to wilt and disease. Wall thickness
in my pumpkin was 6 to 7
inches in the thickest areas. It also had a very
fast growth rate. For the
first few weeks it was growing at a rate that was
slightly faster than Gary
Burkes 1092. A week of temps over 100 slowed it
down and caused it to
mature early. Its mom is the 747 Wyckoff 97 and it
was self pollinated.

Barbi & group,
The Gold Rush variety has the largest stem I
have seen on a field
pumpkin. They average 35 pounds in my commercial
fields but had one go 103
pounds. The stems on a gold rush makes a howden look
like a little toothpick.
Tom Fox was developed by Tom Fox in New
Hampshire....an acquaintance of mine.
Tom fox is a mid sized pumpkin with a large stem for
its size. 75% of my
fields are planted with these. Gold Rush seeds go
for 50 or 60 dollars a
pound, compared to the run of the mill 12 dollar
field pumpkin seeds. It pays
to spend the extra money and get some good seeds.
As far as rotting, they
should be sprayed. If they were picked very late in
the season, they may have
broken down due to chilling injury.

Hi everyone,
I received my soil test results today. I didn't
understand everything on the
test so I went to the local co-op to ask questions.
During our conversation,
he asked my what I all added to my garden this fall.
I told him that I added
manure and lots of leaves. He frowned on the fact
that I added leaves to the
garden because of the bacteria that breaks down
leaves. He stated that the
bacteria uses a lot of nitrogen to break down the
leaves and suggested that I
double my suggested amount of nitrogen to be added
to the garden. Has anyone
else heard of this before? Before I add the amount
that he suggested, I
wanted to hear what everyone else had to say. Any
advice or comments would
greatly be appreciated!!!!!!

Hi everyone. An update on my pumpkins. I
retrieved seeds from my 405
and got 500 good seeds. There also had to be about
100 seeds that were
germinated. I would love to give these away. If
anyone is interested in
them email me privately. I think they have a good
potential. My plant was
very resistent to wilt and disease. Wall thickness
in my pumpkin was 6 to 7
inches in the thickest areas. It also had a very
fast growth rate. For the
first few weeks it was growing at a rate that was
slightly faster than Gary
Burkes 1092. A week of temps over 100 slowed it
down and caused it to
mature early. Its mom is the 747 Wyckoff 97 and it
was self pollinated.

I have always heard that when you compost with
leaves and manure that you
need to add nitrogan to keep the process going. I
would assume that the
nitrogen is for the bacteria.
