Bob,
I usually compost the pumpkin first and then till it in with the
rest of the compost. A few sliced up pumpkins mixed with late season grass
clippings and fall leaves seems to get the compost going good in fall then
resumes well in early spring. I also remove the vines and burn them if I
can. From what I have read of composting it is generaly considered better
for the soil to compost first then till in.
