If, as you propose, pumpkins are supposed to be orange, why are cream and
yellow acceptable? If I remember my color charts from junior high, there's
as much yellow in green as there is in orange. Squash come in green,
yellow, orange, tan and blue. 

On the pumpkin side, I plant Lumina field pumpkins, which are nearly white.

Personally, I think what we call giant pumpkins are really just big orange
squash. However, I think it is acceptable to put color requirements on the
finished product. It requires that a grower be more discriminating in
selecting seeds.

But I still don't know why we accept cream and yellow under the orange
umbrella.
