   I feel you can prepare the patch in the spring,  but it is better to do it 
in the fall because if you have to make any adjustments,  they take time to 
happen.  If you do it in the fall the adjustments will have already completed 
themselves by the spring.
   You can only do what time and mothernature allows you to do though.
