RE: PGPGA Pennsylvania Pumpkin Bowl Vl Altoona, PA

Gordon,

You took it WAY too far to make a simple point. I agree with you on the
nicer looking pumpkin thing, or even the size thing, but it is a WEIGH-off,
not a beauty pageant. I still agree with the separate category prizes, but
since it is a weigh-off, shouldn't the weight be the #1 factor?

No need to reply, we have taken enough time on this subject. Sorry if I
opened up old wounds.

I just hope a few more people can see this from the point of view of someone
who has grown a big squmpkin that was pushed out of the big prize money
because of something out of his/her control. (I have never grown a squmpkin.
Most of you know I always look for seeds with good color genetics...orange,
green or white.) Since I am always looking for good color over size, this
argument is not necessarily in my interest, just the betterment of the
sport...real or otherwise.

Subject:	Re: PGPGA Pennsylvania Pumpkin Bowl Vl Altoona, PA

personally I go to see big orangish pumpkins.
green and white fruit are "ho hum" to me. I
guess it's the whole Halloween thing - you know
traditional orange jack o lantern pumpkins.
i don't see many carved squash when i'm out with my
kids and they are trick or treating. i guess they do
have the white pumpkins now- but i don't like them.
and what it this thing about this weight thing?
who defined heaviest as best? I personally don't like
it. I like size- volume. OTT rules!
how dissappointing is it to have a larger OTT fruit
loose to a smaller one, especially if its a white one
!
yikes ! heaven for bid. I won't even mention "green"
here. And what about shape? many people think
the best pumpkins are the nice round shaped ones. I
DO.
did you ever see the 878 Wilson - tall round nice
orange- best fruit ever in my book !
others like the really tall ones. aren't the tallest
buildings around cooler than the bigger dumpy
warehouse
ones- same with pumpkins right? I think so.
So there shouldn't there be more money for all of
those
categories too? and we, and the records people,
should keep track of all those catagories too- right ?

And what about city growers, suburban and out in the
country growers- shouldn't there be an award and more
money for each?
and what about the poor guy who comes in last place-
we all feel badly for him, especially if he's some
young kid who's a new grower.
and speaking of new growers shouldn't 1st year growers
have their own cateory ? 2nd year? 3rd ? what about
about the most improved gower from last year ?
and what if you moved and started in a new garden?
so there should be more money for all of those
different grower categories too- right? RIGHT !
and if have winners then we have losers -
well that isn't a very nice or pollicatally correct
thing to have.
and what if your fruit split before weigh off-
well that grower may have put in just as much
work or more, as the grower who wins, regardless
of color. so how does that poor guy feel.
certainly he feels worse that the guy with the big
squash that lost to the guy with the smaller pumpkin.
i mean at least the squash man still got $100. I know
what if we just give every one who shows up something
?

and if first prize is $10,000- then thats what we
should give every one. hey- i'd like that. ( I could
really use the money ) that would be fair right?
everyone would be happy and no one would get their
feelings hurt. ALL RIGHT !
so there we have it... all you people who run weigh
off- every one who shows up gets $10,000, OK.

-oh wait... what if you were going to show up
but couldn't make it because of some reason?
car trouble... family emergengy...
oh man - i give up... just when i thought i had
it all figured out too. I GIVE UP !!!

I guess all you people running the weigh offs-
will just have to continue doing the best you
can under the rules of the organizstions that
you belong, or the rules that you have come up
with, and you think work best for your weigh off.
and if people don't like them then i guess they are
still free to express their ideas and opinions
to you to help you out in your efforts. and you are
still free to listen or not, and make changes or not.
and they are still free to choose to go to your
particular weigh off, or not, or start their own weigh
off if the like.
-JUST MY OPINIONS-
-NO OFFENCE INTENDED TO ANYONE -

I agree with you gus there are alot of pumpkins that
produce big squash it should be the biggest fruit.mark

It would be nice to have higher cash prizes for
everything, however prize money is not easy to come by
and we are very lucky to have enough for the
1K first prize for pumpkin. We also have had a limited
amount of squash entered over the years. Running a
weigh-off is no easy chore, as those of you who have
done so are quite aware. It is difficult to please
everyone, but we try our best.

I must protest!
I noticed the squash category only has a $100 first
prize. This can be seen in contests across the
board. I realize people are looking for orange, but
if I grow a 1000# squash and take it to a weigh-off as
the largest fruit, I would be pretty upset if someone
with a 900# pumpkin won ten times what I won!
(These are fictional numbers for the sake of
argument!)
