Re: easy to tell if it is squash...
If what you say is true, and the sponsors do not influence the end
result of what category a fruit ends up in, then making the rule (which
seems to have a good backing) to have 100 percent green for squash, and
all others pumpkins should be an easy change. I mean, lets be honest, if
you look at a late season color changed fruit, Do you say to yourself:
A> "Man, that is definitely a squash" or
B> "That fruit greened up alot late... and should be a squash"....
If "A" is your answer.. my point is easy to make.. If it is "B", then we
continue to have the problems we have had in the past, and had this
year. Yes, sponsorship is great, all weigh offs have some sort of
sponsorship, either private or public. My point is that the GPC needs to
address the concerns of the growers, and this orange / green conflict
will continue unless a change is made by the GPC>> Grids are always
questionable at best, so to make it easy on (1)contestants worrying if
thier pumpkin is becoming a squash, (2)the judges who have to make a
determination, and (3)the crowd/sponsors who come to see the mammoths,
lets get with Hugh Wiberg and the 20 + GPC site coordinators and have a
good old chat on this topic, as well as the GPC's views on more than one
weigh off date which has also been creating problems this year with the
likes of Topsfield..
