Re: easy to tell if it is squash...
Ok, i usually don't post that much, but i thought i'd chime in on this
one. The topic of sponsors is an interesting one. IF the winning pumpkin
is to be left on display at the place or business of the sponsor, i can
agree with the rules of discrimination against green. BUT, most of the
sponsors (that i've noticed) are fertilizer companies or similar plant care
companies. I would assume that they would rather brag about their
sponsorship helping to grow a 2,000 pound "fruit" than a pretty 500 pound
pumpkin. This also brings up another point of interest. Why in the world
would you count the color on the bottom of the fruit if you can't see it
anyway? If sponsors wanted the good looking ones, the competitions wouldn't
be based on weight. I saw Tony Ciliberto's pumpkin at Altoona, and although
it was the largest I have ever seen, It didn't win their ribbon for
prettiest pumpkin. I'm in no position to make or change any rules, but it
will be interesting to see what happens.
