Re: easy to tell if it is squash...

The current system is failing us here, right ?
so, as i see it, the choices are:

1) to change the rules to make a the determination
of ones fruit easy for all.

or

2) keep the current rules but improve squash
vs pumpkin intedification method so it can be
applied equally.

If we pick # 1) it leads to the discussion that we
have been having... how to change the rules. all
orange
- pumpkin - etc... but there seems to be less than a
concensus on what should be done. If one could be
reached then that would be a good solution.
and maybe Brett hit the nail on the head...
just vote and see how it fall out. and go with it.
this would certainly simplify judging but I think
will end up upseting either the pure green or the
pure orange people.

It seems to be that most grows are happy with
the "rules" as they are now but the application
of them. (maybe i'm wrong -but i don't think so)
They are uncertain in some cases as to how their
fruit will be judged. and are un happy if they are
judge differnetly than they thought they would be.
or see different interpretation of the rules
at different weigh offs.
What we all want is to see a fair and equall
application of the rules through out all the
weigh offs.
So, to me, it seems like the GPC and our efforts
could go into helping everyone understand
what is a pumpkin and what is a squash under
the current rules. This could include a rule
sheet that has the rules- and how to apply them.
photographs of border line fruit and their final
classification as pumpkin or squash would be included
also as examples of what is what.
(go ahead and slam me here glenn- but think about it -
it would work, a picture is what it is, regardless of
whether the color is true or not)
The guide with the step by step should be fairly
simple and easy to follow so that a grower can do it
at home before the weigh off so he can deciede what
fruit to bring.
Phamplets could be made posted on web site
and distributed by the CGP and local groups.
the only problem i see would be getting the
color right and keeping it the same on the
phamlets over time and on the internet sites.
This method will end up still leaving people at the
subjective decision making of the judges and we might
end up right where we are now. but if developed and
implimented properly, I think it would work well
for all but a very small % of fruit.
I think could solve our delema without upsetting
either the pure green or the pure orange people.

Just my thoughts
gordon
