All mosaic viruses have very similar symptoms. the
only way to tell them apart is by a DNA test on the
effected plant. This test can only rule out a specific
type like Squash mosaic.
As for Squash Mosaic, it is the only mosaic that is
transfered by seeds.
I had an experience with a mosaic last year and
had no problems this year. Mosaic viruses are
transmited by Aphids. They get the disease from a host
plant and then infect the plant when they bite the plant
tissue. I was told by OSU testing labs that there is
very little that can be done to prevent infection
because one bite will infect even if the aphid dies.
Aphids have been know to travel in the winds of the a
front over great distances.
