You can configure to receive the list as "plain text" or "text only"...
meaning rich-text, html, images, attachments, and other such email will
appear as raw strings
of characters, and not be decoded into dangerous executable items. Perhaps
using the "Digest mode" does this by default; I can't remember (it's been so
long since I made this choice). All my pumpkins digest mail comes in text
only format, and I do have digest mode set. You'll still be able to read
all the text messages. The rare posted picture or spreadsheet won't be
visible to your mail tool, but you could check the archives on the web to
see such items.
(When you start using plain text mode, you'll also see just what a huge load
of cargo html format email is... a simple one line post to this list, if in
a fancy font,
in color, and aligned on the page could be many KB in size due to all the
surrounding html code, rather than the
hundred bytes it appears to be when interpreted. I imagine the archives are
at least double the size they need to be due to the increased, unnecessary
use of html mail for simple text messages.)
Also, to Mike N... there are new viruses (like Klez) that can "spoof" the
"From" field in email... it arrives in your mailbox, but first it can paw
around on your own PC, filling in the From field from somebody you've
contacted in the past, so it LOOKS like they sent it, but they really
didn't. Once I got Klez generated mail, apparently from a friend of mine,
BUT at the time, they were out of town for 2 weeks, with their computer shut
down, so it positively did not really come from them.
Now to keep on-topic for something pumpkin-related- I've updated my web site
with my season's final weights...
http://home.rochester.rr.com/srinz/pumpkins2002.html I was pretty happy
considering for the most part I didn't get fruit to stay on until the second
week of August.
