From the photos, my *guess* is that they are trying to obtain the
greatest, "true" circumference measurement that the pumpkin has, in any
orientation.
If it's a "leaner", then they'll measure at an angle. This is certainly a
valid way
to compare the fruit *against each other*; it's just not the "standard" way
of measuring used by the guys doing the current weight estimation charts.
