Soft spot on pumpkin

I just removed one of my pumpkins from the patch and there is a half dollar
size soft spot on the bottom. It is starting to grow. The rest of it looks
good and solid. I don't want it to rot through before Halloween. Is there
anything I can do to keep this spot from going through? should I cut it out?
Seal with wax? Shellac? This is my biggest one (285) and after a frustrating
year I don't want to lose this one. Any help will be appreciated.
