Subject: Bubbles and the Beautification of Half Moon Bay

It was a beautiful day in Half Moon Bay for a weigh-off and

there were hordes of gourds lining the streets - outnumbering

the news reporters by a small margin (I think).

Most the top growers on the West Coast were there - (except,

Bob Troy who was mysteriously absent, humm). The entire

Pacific Northwest crowd was there - and dominated the standings

with their monstrous beasts. What a tough bunch of competitors

these folks are. They were talking to their pumpkins more than

they would to the reporters so I figure they all got their

heads screwed on right.

Two California growers managed to get in the top ten and set a

personal best north of 1,000 pounds - Ray Barenchi and Gary

Miller. Congratulations to them. Wish I could figure out how

to do that....

This was a great contest to bring a pretty pumpkin to since

most the pumpkins there were big and ugly. I brought Lilu's

little sister, Bubbles (both on a 1048 Companion plant) to the

contest where she blew everybody away with her bright orange

smile. She took the Most Beautiful Pumpkin award without

batting an eyelash. She weighed in at 487 pounds in the buff.

Olivia, my 7 year old daugther blithely took all the credit and

refuses to share the prize money with me - $500 bucks and I'll

never see a dime of it!!

To see a photo-log of Bubbles' little adventure at HMB go to

Lilu will take on all comers at the Borchard's Farm weigh-off

this Saturday. Best of luck to all....
