You go boy! If you can find some, let me know if there is any add-ons for
tests in the north and tests in the south. If the money is right, I'll
start another garden out back for your Southern (Mississippi) test!

Very possible. Wouldn't be nice to have the time ourselves. I'll start
researching for government grants tonight!

More protein in the seed is an interesting trait. I also have not
found/seen any studies of a correlation, but aren't the pumpkin's traits
carried onto the seeds? If a seed does sink because of higher protein
content, not just because it is full of water, logic suggests that it would
have a better chance of producing a higher protein pumpkin, thus being a
heavier (size to weight ratio) than the seed that floats. If someone had
the growing space and time, would be an interesting test to carry out.
Maybe some college kid reads our group and runs it by a professor to grow in
a controlled environment. Ideas like this will get us that 2000 lb'r!

Scott,
I have come across no scienific evidence of a correlation between seed
density and fruit growth. The seeds thet sunk were simply more dense than
H2O. Density (d=m/v) The sinkers developed more protien than the floaters.
Farmers used to take samples of soybeans and float or sink them in a bucket
of water. The sample was a decent indicator of protien content. Fruit size
is determined by genetics and growing conditions. When seeds form in the
plant ovary (fruit) most will encapsulate very small air pockets. This is an
evolutionary boone to most plants. A see that floats can be carried far from
the parent plant. Those damn hackle burrs on your hunting dog use annother
stategy for traveling. In my humble oppinion, there is no correlation.

As I dissected my AG and washed the seeds yesterday, I noticed that I had
about 2/3 of the seeds rose to the top of the water and floated happily as I
expected them to. The remaining 1/3 sunk to the bottom and stayed there.
This raises the question for me of whether their is a density characteristic
packed into those sinkers that could produce a heavy pumpkin? Did those
seeds crack and take in water making them sink?
Curious enough to try again, I took some seeds from a Wyatt's Wonder that I
had already harvested and dried. Again, most of the seeds floated, while
some still sunk like the housing market.
Has anyone heard of or experienced a correlation between Floater/Sinkers and
fruit Density/Size?
Regards,
Scott
