SOIL TYPE & DEPTH
Loam to sandy loam with no rooting restrictions for at least one meter
into the soil. An area of 30 x 30 ft per plant (minimum). Be careful not
to damage
soils by creating "pans" that may not allow roots to easily penetrate
the soil (eg plow pan, rototiller pan).
If the soil is shallow there is less potential for growing large
pumpkins as there is less reserve for nutrients (including water) and
more chance of soil
fertility problems. (To compare to houseplants, a shallow root zone is
like a small pot. It can grow a good plant but only with more care and
almost
never exceeds the size of a plant grown in a larger container.)
